Product Overview

Multi Track Sliding Door – Maximum Opening Width, Minimal Structural Intrusion

A multi track sliding door system goes beyond what a standard two-panel sliding door can achieve. By running three, four, or more panels on separate parallel stainless-steel rail tracks, a multi track sliding door allows every panel to slide and stack to one or both ends of the opening — creating a clear, unobstructed passage that can extend to 80–90% of the total door assembly width. The visual and spatial impact is profound: a multi track sliding door effectively erases the barrier between interior and exterior, turning a wall into an opening at the touch of a handle.

SKATE's multi track sliding door system is engineered to handle the weight, scale, and operational demands of large-format sliding panels in residential, hospitality, and commercial applications, using the same heavy-duty stainless-steel roller and track technology as our individual heavy sliding door products — but coordinated across multiple panels in a single system.

How Multi-Track Systems Work

In a standard two-track sliding door, one panel is fixed and one slides, providing a maximum clear opening of approximately 50% of the total width. In a multi track sliding door:

- Three-track (e.g., OOX or XOO): Two sliding panels and one fixed panel, or two fixed and one sliding. Maximum clear opening increases to approximately 65–70% of total width. - Four-track (e.g., XOOX or OOXX): Three or four sliding panels that stack behind each other at one or both ends. Maximum clear opening approaches 75–85% of total width. - Five-track and beyond: Extremely wide openings for commercial-scale applications. Each additional track adds a sliding panel and proportionally increases the available clear opening.

As panels slide, they stack in sequence on their individual tracks behind one or both of the fixed end panels. When fully open, the stacked panels occupy a depth equivalent to the number of sliding panels multiplied by the panel frame depth — typically 300–600 mm of wall depth, concealed within a pocket wall or standing proud as a panel stack beside the opening.

Track Engineering & Roller System

The precision of the track system is the defining quality differentiator in any multi track sliding door. SKATE's track sections are extruded from 6063-T5 aluminum alloy with inlaid stainless-steel rolling surfaces, providing a hardened bearing surface that resists wear from the loaded roller wheels over decades of operation. Each panel runs on a dedicated roller carriage with four to eight stainless-steel wheels, distributing the panel's glass weight evenly and smoothly along the track.

The track sections are mounted in a continuous head extrusion that spans the full width of the door opening, engineered to deflect less than L/360 under full glass load — ensuring that panels continue to slide smoothly and seal correctly regardless of the load imposed by the glass weight across a wide span.

Panel Interlock & Weather Sealing

When all panels of a multi track sliding door are closed, adjacent panels interlock at their meeting stiles through a combination of brush pile seals and compression weather strips, preventing air infiltration at the panel-to-panel interfaces. The outer panels seal against the fixed frame jambs through the same peripheral compression gasket system used in SKATE's individual sliding door products. The head and sill channels are designed with integral drainage weep holes that prevent water accumulation inside the track during heavy rainfall.

Energy Performance

The thermal break profiles and Low-E argon-filled glazing available across SKATE's multi track sliding door range deliver energy performance appropriate for temperate and warm climates. In cold-climate applications where maximum thermal efficiency is required, SKATE's Lift-and-Slide door system — which achieves superior compression sealing in the closed position — may be the more appropriate specification.

For the vast majority of residential and commercial applications in North America, Australia, and the warmer regions of Europe, the multi track sliding door's performance is fully compliant with current energy codes.

Motorised Operation

Multi track sliding door panels of 150 kg or more per panel benefit significantly from motorised operation. SKATE integrates concealed linear or rack-and-pinion drive motors into the track system, connected to the sliding panels through a carriage linkage. Motorised systems typically include:

Applications

Multi track sliding doors are specified for: luxury residential living areas connecting to large terraces, gardens, or pools; high-end hotel guest rooms with wide balcony openings; commercial restaurants and hospitality venues with outdoor-dining areas; retail showrooms requiring maximum display frontage; indoor sports facilities and event spaces requiring large, flexible openings; and any architectural project where a wide, unobstructed opening between two spaces is the design intent.

Sliding Patio Door — Frequently Asked Questions

  • Systems up to 10,000 mm wide with 6–8 panels are achievable with appropriate structural head track support. Very wide systems require structural engineering assessment for the head track span.
