Product Overview

Aluminum Windows Tilt and Turn – Europe's Favorite Dual-Action Window

Aluminum windows tilt and turn represent one of the most functionally sophisticated casement window designs available. Originating in German engineering tradition and now adopted across Europe, North America, and Australasia, the tilt-and-turn mechanism delivers two distinct modes of operation from a single sash and a single handle — making it the preferred window specification for architects and homeowners who demand maximum flexibility, security, and thermal performance in one product.

SKATE's aluminum windows tilt and turn are built on our advanced thermal break profile system, combining the structural superiority of 6063-T5 aluminum alloy with European-standard hardware from Roto, Siegenia, and GU for a product that delivers exceptional reliability and ease of use.

Understanding the Tilt-and-Turn Mechanism

The unique value of aluminum windows tilt and turn lies in its two-position handle operation:

- Handle at 90° (Horizontal): The sash tilts inward from the top, opening a narrow gap at the head of the window. This provides secure, draught-free ventilation that allows fresh air circulation without creating a security risk. Rain entering at this angle is deflected by the tilted sash, making this mode usable even during light rain.

- Handle at 180° (Vertical/Upward): The sash pivots inward on its vertical side hinges, opening fully like a casement door. This permits maximum ventilation, easy external glass cleaning, and emergency egress.

This dual functionality makes aluminum windows tilt and turn especially valuable in urban apartments and high-rise buildings where security must be maintained even when ventilating, as well as in climates with frequent rainfall.

Thermal Performance

The PA66 GF25 polyamide thermal break within SKATE's aluminum tilt-and-turn window profile effectively interrupts the aluminum's thermal conductivity, preventing cold bridging and interior condensation. When paired with triple Low-E argon-filled glazing (5+12Ar+5+12Ar+5 mm), these windows achieve Uw values below 1.0 W/m²K — qualifying for passive house certification in most international standards.

The four-point peripheral sealing system — compression gaskets at the frame rebate, pivot seals at the hinge side, and wiper seals at the meeting faces — ensures outstanding air and water tightness in both tilt and turn positions.

Security Features

SKATE aluminum windows tilt and turn incorporate multi-point locking as standard, with locking points distributed around the sash perimeter. When in the closed position, all locking points engage simultaneously, providing resistance to forced entry that far exceeds that of standard single-point locks. A child safety restrictor device can limit the sash to tilt-only mode, preventing children from opening the window fully while allowing adult users to disengage the restrictor when needed.

Installation & Cleaning

Because the sash swings fully inward in the turn mode, the exterior glass surface of aluminum tilt-and-turn windows is fully accessible from inside the building — eliminating the need for external access for routine glass cleaning. This is a significant safety and cost advantage in multi-storey buildings.

Surface Finishes

All SKATE standard finishes apply: RAL powder coat, PVDF, anodised, and wood grain transfer. Dual-color frames — different on the interior and exterior surfaces — are a popular option for this product, allowing interior décor coordination without affecting the exterior architectural finish.

Typical Applications

Aluminum windows tilt and turn are widely used in: urban apartment buildings and condominiums; high-rise residential towers; European-style villas; schools, hospitals, and commercial offices requiring secure, controlled ventilation; and any building where window cleaning from inside is a priority.

Tilt-and-Turn Window — Frequently Asked Questions

  • The tilt position is determined by the hardware geometry and cannot be adjusted incrementally. However, tilt limiters can restrict the tilt opening to a minimal gap for maximum security in commercial applications.
